Q&As about dioxin exposure among former Ivon Watkins Dow workers

FAQ's

Q. I'm worried I might have been exposed to dioxins when I worked at IWD. What should I do?

A. Firstly, former IWD workers should make an appointment to see their own GP if they have any concerns about possible exposure to dioxins in the past. It's important they mention their work history to their GP, as this will help the GP to better assess their condition. This may include a referral to the Department of Labour's health and safety service for additional assessment.

Q. Can I contact the Department directly if I have concerns?

A. By all means. The New Plymouth Office has staff and an occupational physician dedicated to help former IWD workers concerned about historical workplace exposure to dioxins, and they will help by providing information about dioxin and its possible workplace effects, and to refer them to ACC or a local health service provider if required. Alternatively, former workers can contact ACC directly on freephone 0800 101 996.

Q. Does the Department keep a record of former workers who have contacted the New Plymouth Office?

A. Yes. Our Taranaki staff will register the enquirer's name, employment details and the nature of their interest or concern.

Q. How do I contact the New Plymouth Office?

A. The office is based in New Plymouth, phone 06 759 9400.

Q. Is there anywhere else I can get more information about dioxins?

A. The Ministry of Health website features a lot of information about dioxins, particularly the study it has commissioned into the health of former and current residents of Paritutu, where the former IWD plant operated. The Ministry of Health also operates a freephone line 0800 555 567.
