Amputation of body parts Operation performed on fingers, hands, toes, feet (and occasionally other body parts) by machines like mechanical presses, saws, guillotines, mowers, harvesters, grain augers, tractor power takeoffs, and other agricultural machinery. Operation is performed without anaesthetic and apt to be painful. Surgeons can work miracles in repairing the damage but there are limits even to their skill. A toe sewn on to your hand to replace a thumb that's been amputated can never match the real thing. So, avoid losing bits of yourself by keeping machine guards in place and wearing protective gear such as safety shoes. Make sure loose clothing or long hair can't get tangled up in moving machinery parts - you could be strangled or scalped. Don't use any machine until you've been trained in its use and you know the hazards and how to avoid them.
