Manual handling

Manual handling is any activity requiring the use of force to push, pull, lift, carry, move or restrain any object.

Examples of manual handling hazards:

  • Trying to manoeuvre a heavy 44-gallon drum on to a ute.
  • Leaning awkwardly over a fence to mark sheep with dye.
  • Bending over to plant or pick vegetables.

Some ways you can reduce hazards from manual handling are:

  • Use mechanical equipment wherever possible to raise or move heavy loads: for example drum lifters and small mobile hoists.
  • Use a trolley to move loads over an even floor surface such as in a shed.
  • Seek assistance handle a heavy load.
  • Keep frequently used tools at waist height.
